Key Topics to Revise

1

1. What Rational Numbers Are

  • A rational number is written as p/q, where p and q are co-prime integers and q is not zero.
  • p is the numerator and q is the denominator.
  • Every integer is a rational number, but not every rational number is an integer.
2

2. Number Line Representation and Comparison

  • Positive rational numbers lie to the right of 0 on the number line.
  • Negative rational numbers lie to the left of 0 on the number line.
  • A number on the left of another number is smaller.
3

3. Finding Rational Numbers Between Two Given Numbers

  • An infinite number of rational numbers can be inserted between two rational numbers.
  • A common method is to make denominators equal and then list the fractions between them.
  • Different valid methods may give different inserted numbers.
4

4. Addition and Subtraction of Rational Numbers

  • When denominators are equal, add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator same.
  • When denominators are unequal, first make the denominators equal.
  • Always simplify the final answer if possible.
