Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Basic Ideas of Probability

  • An experiment is an operation which can produce some well-defined outcomes.
  • An outcome is a well-defined result of an experiment.
  • A single coin toss has two outcomes: head and tail.
2

2. Empirical Probability

  • Empirical probability is based on actual trials or observations.
  • The probability of an event is found by dividing the number of trials in which the event happened by the total number of trials.
  • The same idea can also be written as favourable outcomes divided by total outcomes in simple situations.
3

3. Solved Examples and Answer Patterns

  • For a coin tossed 40 times with 14 heads, probability of head = 14/40 = 7/20.
  • For the same experiment, probability of tail = 26/40 = 13/20.
  • For 400 students, 165 like tea only, 120 like coffee only, and 115 like both.
4

4. Complementary Events

  • Two events are complementary if exactly one of them occurs.
  • For an event E, its complementary event is written as E'.
  • E' is the event when E does not occur.
