  • A set is a collection of well-defined objects, things, or symbols.
  • Well-defined means it is always clear whether something belongs to the set or not.
  • The objects in a set are called elements or members.

2. Ways to Represent a Set

  • A set can be written in description form, roster or tabular form, and set-builder form.
  • In description form, the set is described in words.
  • In roster form, all elements are listed inside brackets.

3. Cardinal Number and Types of Sets

  • The cardinal number of a set is the number of elements in it.
  • If a set A has 5 elements, then n(A) = 5.
  • If B = {0}, then n(B) = 1 because 0 is an element of the set.

4. Disjoint, Joint, Equal, and Equivalent Sets

  • Sets having no element in common are called disjoint sets.
  • Sets having at least one element in common are called joint or overlapping sets.
  • Two sets are equal if the elements of both sets are the same.
