1. Basic idea of percent

  • CENT means hundred.
  • Percent means per hundred or out of hundred.
  • Percent notation is written using the % sign.

2. Converting between fraction, decimal, ratio and percent

  • To change a fraction or decimal into percent, multiply by 100 and write %.
  • To change a percent into a fraction or decimal, divide by 100 and remove %.
  • A ratio can also be written as percent after converting it into a fraction.

3. One quantity as a percent of another

  • First make the units the same if needed.
  • Then form the fraction with the quantity being compared as the numerator and the base quantity as the denominator.
  • Multiply by 100 and write %.

4. Percentage of a quantity

  • p% of N means p/100 × N.
  • This is used to find a part of a quantity.
  • The whole quantity, whole work, etc. are always taken as 100%.
