Card 1Basic Concepts

What is a tissue?

Answer

A tissue is a group of similar cells performing a specific function together. For example, muscle tissue is made up of muscle cells that contract to bring about movement.

Card 2Plant Tissues

What are the two basic types of plant tissues?

Answer

1. Meristematic tissue - cells that can multiply to produce new cells (actively dividing) 2. Permanent tissue - non-dividing cells that are specialized for specific functions

Card 3Plant Tissues

List the chief characteristics of meristematic tissue.

Answer

1. Cells are small and usually cubical 2. Cell wall is thin 3. Nuclei are large 4. Vacuoles almost absent 5. Cells tightly packed with no intercellular spaces 6. Cells actively divide adding new cells

Card 4Plant Tissues

What are the two types of meristematic tissue and where are they located?

Answer

1. Apical/Terminal meristem - located at tips of roots, stems, young leaves, and axillary buds 2. Cambium/Lateral meristem - located below the bark, responsible for increase in stem diameter

Card 5Plant Tissues

What are the three types of permanent tissues based on function?

Answer

1. Protective tissue - cells with thick walls found on surfaces (e.g., epidermis) 2. Supporting tissue - provides support (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma) 3. Conducting tissue - provides passag

Card 6Plant Tissues

Compare parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma tissues.

Answer

Parenchyma: Large thin-walled cells, single large vacuole, found in soft parts, stores food Collenchyma: Elongated cells thickened at corners, found in leaf stalks, provides support Sclerenchyma: Long

Card 7Plant Tissues

What is chlorenchyma and what is its function?

Answer

Chlorenchyma is parenchymatous tissue containing chloroplasts, particularly found in leaves. Its function is to help the leaf produce food through photosynthesis.

Card 8Plant Tissues

What is xylem and what are its main components?

Answer

Xylem is conducting tissue that transports water and dissolved materials upward from roots to other parts. Components: 1. Tracheids - elongated dead cells 2. Vessels/tracheae - long tube-like structur
