1. Natural Numbers, Whole Numbers, and Integers

  • Natural numbers are the counting numbers 1, 2, 3, ...
  • There is no greatest natural number.
  • Natural numbers are closed under addition and multiplication, but subtraction and division may not give a natural number.

2. Rational Numbers and Standard Form

  • A rational number is any number that can be written as p/q, where p and q are integers and q is not 0.
  • Every integer, whole number, and natural number is a rational number.
  • A rational number may be positive or negative depending on the signs of p and q.

3. Arithmetic Operations on Rational Numbers

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be performed on rational numbers.
  • For same denominators, add or subtract numerators directly.
  • For different denominators, use the common denominator method.

4. Decimal Representation of Rational Numbers

  • A rational number has either a terminating decimal or a non-terminating repeating decimal expansion.
  • A terminating decimal ends after a finite number of decimal places.
  • A non-terminating repeating decimal has a repeated block of digits.
