Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Doppler Effect in Sound

  • If the distance between the source and observer decreases, the apparent frequency increases.
  • If the distance between the source and observer increases, the apparent frequency decreases.
  • A stationary source and stationary observer give the true frequency.
2

2. Reflected Sound

  • Reflected sound from a stationary wall must be treated in two steps.
  • First, treat the wall as a stationary observer receiving sound from the moving car.
  • Then treat the wall as a stationary source re-emitting the reflected sound.
3

3. Non-Collinear Motion

  • When source and observer are not on the same line of motion, only the velocity components along the line joining them are used.
  • The full speed is not used directly.
  • For perpendicular or angled motion, resolve velocities into components first.
4

4. Doppler Effect in Light

  • Doppler effect also occurs in light.
  • If the distance between source and observer decreases, apparent frequency increases.
  • If the distance between source and observer increases, apparent frequency decreases.
