Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Dimensions and Dimensional Formula

  • Dimensions are the powers to which the fundamental units are raised to obtain the unit of a derived quantity.
  • Length, mass, and time are represented by [L], [M], and [T].
  • If a quantity has powers a, b, and c in length, mass, and time, its dimensional formula is [L^a M^b T^c].
2

2. Dimensionless Quantities and Classification

  • Pure ratios and pure numbers do not have dimensions and are called dimensionless quantities.
  • Angle, strain, relative density, pi, sin theta, and tan theta are dimensionless quantities.
  • A dimensionless quantity may still have a unit, but a unitless quantity cannot possess dimensions.
3

3. Principle of Homogeneity and Uses of Dimensional Analysis

  • Every equation relating physical quantities must be dimensionally homogeneous.
  • Only quantities with the same dimensions can be added, subtracted, or equated.
  • This principle is used to check whether a physical equation is correct.
4

4. Limitations of Dimensional Analysis

  • Dimensional analysis cannot calculate the value of a dimensionless constant.
  • It cannot establish relations when a quantity depends on more than three factors.
  • It cannot be used for equations involving trigonometric, exponential, or logarithmic terms.
