1. Torque and Angular Momentum
- Torque is the turning effect of a force about an axis or point.
- Torque is a vector quantity and is given by the cross product of position vector and force.
- Torque is maximum when the force is perpendicular to the position vector.
2. Rigid Body, Motion Variables, and Equations of Rotational Motion
- A rigid body is a body in which external force does not produce relative displacement between particles.
- In rigid body rotation, every particle has the same angular velocity and angular acceleration.
- Different particles have different linear velocity and linear acceleration because they are at different distances from the axis.
3. Moment of Inertia and Radius of Gyration
- Moment of inertia is the property by which a body opposes change in its rotational state.
- It depends on mass and also on how mass is distributed about the axis.
- Moment of inertia is a tensor quantity, not a scalar or vector.
4. Theorems of Parallel and Perpendicular Axes
- The parallel axes theorem relates moment of inertia about any axis to that about a parallel axis through the centre of mass.
- The perpendicular axes theorem applies to a uniform plane lamina.
- For a plane lamina, the perpendicular axis moment of inertia equals the sum of the moments of inertia about two perpendicular axes in the plane.
