Key Topics to Revise

1

Modes of Heat Transfer

  • Conduction is heat transfer in which particles of the body do not leave their positions.
  • Conduction occurs in solids and in mercury.
  • In metals, conduction mainly takes place through free electrons.
2

Heat Conduction, Isothermal Surfaces, and Temperature Gradient

  • In a conductor, heat flows from the hot end to the cold end.
  • In variable state, the temperature of each cross-section of a rod increases with time.
  • In steady state, the temperature of each section remains constant with time.
3

Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Resistance

  • Coefficient of thermal conductivity measures how much heat flows through unit area per unit time under unit temperature gradient in steady state.
  • A large value of K means a good heat conductor.
  • A small value of K means a poor conductor or a good insulator.
4

Heat Flow Through Composite Slabs

  • When slabs are joined in series, the same heat flow passes through each slab in steady state.
  • For slabs in series, interface temperature is found by equating the heat flow through both slabs.
  • For equal lengths in series, interface temperature becomes a weighted average of end temperatures.
