1. Ideal Liquid, Stream-lined Flow, and Turbulent Flow
- An ideal liquid has zero compressibility and zero viscosity.
- Zero compressibility means volume does not change on pressing.
- Zero viscosity means no tangential friction between layers.
2. Viscosity, Velocity Gradient, and Newton's Law of Viscosity
- Viscosity is the property by virtue of which a liquid opposes relative motion between adjacent layers.
- Viscous force acts like internal friction.
- Velocity gradient is the rate of change of velocity with distance perpendicular to flow.
3. Stokes' Law, Terminal Velocity, and Applications
- A falling body in a viscous fluid first accelerates, then reaches terminal velocity.
- Terminal velocity is the constant velocity attained when net force becomes zero.
- Stokes' law gives viscous force on a small sphere moving in a homogeneous viscous medium.
4. Flow Through Pipes and Poiseuille's Formula
- Rate of flow through a pipe depends on viscosity, radius of pipe, and pressure gradient.
- Poiseuille's relation is used to determine viscosity of a liquid.
- Viscous resistance increases with length of pipe and decreases strongly with radius.
