Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Periodic Motion, Oscillatory Motion, and SHM

  • Periodic motion repeats continuously on a definite path in a definite interval of time.
  • The interval of repetition is called the time period, T.
  • Examples of periodic motion include the earth's revolution around the sun, Halley's Comet, the Moon, and the hands of a clock.
2

2. Restoring Force, Acceleration, and SHM Equations

  • No net force acts on a vibrating particle at equilibrium.
  • When displaced, a restoring force acts towards equilibrium.
  • The restoring force may be electrical, magnetic, gravitational, or elastic in nature.
3

3. Phase, Displacement, Velocity, and Graphical Features

  • Phase expresses the position and direction of motion of an oscillating particle at an instant.
  • Two oscillating particles are in the same phase if they pass through equilibrium in the same direction at the same instant.
  • They are in opposite phase if they pass through equilibrium in opposite directions.
4

4. Energy in SHM

  • A particle in SHM has both kinetic energy and potential energy.
  • Total energy remains constant if dissipative forces are absent.
  • Potential energy is zero at equilibrium and maximum at the extreme positions.
