Basic ideas: deforming force, elasticity, and limit of elasticity

  • A deforming force changes the size, shape, or both of a body.
  • The change produced in a body is called deformation.
  • Elasticity is the property that helps a body oppose deformation and recover its original state after the force is removed.

Stress and strain

  • Stress is the internal restoring force acting per unit area of the cross-section of a deformed body.
  • Stress is measured by external force per unit area in equilibrium.
  • Strain is the change in unit size of a body.

Hooke’s law and stress-strain graph

  • Hooke showed experimentally that if strain is small, stress is proportional to strain.
  • The ratio stress/strain is a constant for a material and is called modulus of elasticity.
  • If strain is longitudinal, the modulus is Young’s modulus.

Young’s modulus and extension of wires

  • Young’s modulus is defined for longitudinal stress and longitudinal strain.
  • It can be determined only for solids.
  • A body like a wire shows longitudinal extension when pulled by equal and opposite forces along its length.
