Topics in Electric Potential
1. Electric Potential and Potential Difference
- Electric potential is a scalar quantity.
- It is defined as the work done by an external agent in carrying a unit positive test charge from infinity to a point in an electric field.
- Potential difference between two points is the work done per unit charge in moving a positive test charge from one point to another.
2. Electron-volt
- Electron-volt is a very small unit of work or energy used in atomic physics.
- It is the energy gained by an electron when accelerated through a potential difference of 1 volt.
- 1 electron-volt equals 1.6×10^-19 joule.
3. Potential Due to Point Charges and Group of Charges
- Potential due to a point charge in a medium of dielectric constant K varies as 1/r.
- For a negative point charge, the potential is negative.
- Potential due to n point charges is the algebraic sum of individual potentials.
4. Potential Gradient and Relation Between Electric Field and Potential
- Potential gradient is the rate of change of potential with distance.
- It is a vector quantity.
- Electric field is equal to the negative potential gradient.
