Topics in DC Circuits and Measurements

1

1. Electric Cell, EMF, and Terminal Potential Difference

  • An electric cell is a source of electrical energy that maintains a continuous flow of charge in a circuit.
  • A cell has two electrodes immersed in an electrolyte. Chemical reaction in the electrolyte produces ions and converts chemical energy into electrical energy.
  • Electromotive force is the work done by the cell in forcing unit positive charge to flow in the whole circuit, including the cell.
2

2. Combination of Cells and Maximum Current

  • Cells can be combined in series, parallel, or mixed grouping to obtain the required current.
  • A battery is a combination of two or more cells.
  • In series combination, the negative pole of one cell is connected to the positive pole of the next cell.
3

3. Kirchhoff's Laws

  • Kirchhoff gave two laws in 1842.
  • Kirchhoff's first law is the junction rule or current law.
  • At any junction, the algebraic sum of currents is zero.
4

4. Wheatstone Bridge and Metre Bridge

  • Wheatstone bridge is a parallelogram arrangement of four resistances with a galvanometer in one diagonal and a cell in the other.
  • The bridge is balanced when the galvanometer shows no deflection.
  • At balance, the ratio of the resistances in one pair of adjacent arms equals the ratio of the resistances in the other pair.
