Topics in Interference of Light

1

1. Principle of Superposition and Interference

  • The principle of superposition states that when two or more waves travel simultaneously in a medium, the resultant displacement at any point is the vector sum of the individual displacements.
  • It holds for all types of waves, except for waves of very large amplitude, such as laser waves.
  • Interference of light is the redistribution of light intensity due to the superposition of two light waves.
2

2. Young's Double-Slit Experiment

  • Thomas Young demonstrated experimentally the interference of light by a double slit in 1801.
  • A narrow slit S is illuminated by monochromatic light and two narrow slits S1 and S2 act as coherent secondary sources.
  • Fringes formed are alternately bright and dark, of equal width, and run parallel to the slits.
3

3. Conditions for Bright and Dark Fringes

  • At maxima, the interfering waves meet in the same phase.
  • At minima, the interfering waves meet in opposite phase.
  • Bright fringes correspond to antinodal lines in the wavelet picture.
4

4. Fringe Width, Intensity, and Energy Conservation

  • All bright fringes in monochromatic YDSE have equal intensity when the two slits contribute equal amplitudes.
  • All dark fringes have zero intensity when the two amplitudes are equal.
  • Fringe width does not depend on fringe order.
