  • A current-carrying solenoid, coil, or loop behaves like a bar magnet.
  • A planar current loop is equivalent to a magnetic dipole.

  • An electron revolving around the nucleus behaves like a tiny current loop.
  • Because the electron has negative charge, its magnetic moment is opposite to its orbital angular momentum.
  • The ratio m/J is constant and is called the gyromagnetic ratio.

3. Magnetic Field of a Bar Magnet

  • A bar magnet produces magnetic field along its axis and equatorial line.
  • For a small magnet, the axial field is twice the equatorial field in magnitude and opposite in direction.
  • Near the poles, field lines are closer, so the field is stronger.

4. Torque and Potential Energy of a Magnetic Dipole

  • A magnetic dipole in a uniform magnetic field experiences torque.
  • Torque is maximum when the dipole axis is perpendicular to the field.
  • Torque is zero when the dipole axis is parallel or antiparallel to the field.
