Topics in Magnetic Classification of Substances

1

1. Classification of Magnetic Substances

  • All substances, including solids, liquids, and gases, fall into diamagnetic, paramagnetic, or ferromagnetic classes.
  • Every substance is fundamentally diamagnetic, but in paramagnetic and ferromagnetic substances this property is masked by the stronger magnetic effect.
  • Diamagnetic substances are feebly magnetised opposite to the magnetising field and are repelled by a magnet.
2

2. Magnetic Induction, Magnetisation, and Magnetic Intensity

  • Magnetic induction B is the magnetic flux density inside a magnetised substance.
  • SI unit of B is tesla; CGS unit is gauss, and 1 G = 10^-4 T.
  • Magnetisation M is the magnetic moment per unit volume of a magnetised substance.
3

3. Properties of Dia-, Para-, and Ferromagnetic Substances

  • A freely suspended diamagnetic rod sets itself perpendicular to the magnetic field.
  • A freely suspended paramagnetic rod sets itself parallel to the magnetic field.
  • A diamagnetic substance moves from stronger to weaker regions of a non-uniform magnetic field.
4

4. Atomic Explanation of Magnetism

  • Electron spin is the main source of atomic magnetic moment; orbital motion contributes very little.
  • Diamagnetic substances generally have atoms, ions, or molecules with paired electrons and zero net magnetic moment.
  • When a diamagnetic substance is placed in a field, the induced moment is opposite to the field because of the Lenz-law effect.
