Topics in Alternating Current

1

1. Basic idea of alternating current

  • Direct current remains constant in magnitude and direction.
  • Alternating current changes periodically in magnitude and direction.
  • Alternating current supplied from power houses and nuclear reactors is suitable for commercial use because it can be transmitted at high voltage.
2

2. Peak value, mean value, and rms value

  • Peak value is the maximum value reached by alternating current or voltage.
  • Mean value over one complete cycle is zero.
  • Mean value over one half-cycle is finite and equals 0.637 times the peak value.
3

3. AC from a rotating coil and AC generator

  • When a closed coil rotates in a magnetic field, the magnetic flux through it changes continuously.
  • A changing magnetic flux induces an emf in the coil.
  • The peak emf induced in a rotating coil is V0 = NBAω.
4

4. Reactance and impedance

  • Reactance is the effective opposition to alternating current due to inductance or capacitance.
  • Inductive reactance increases with frequency.
  • Capacitive reactance decreases with frequency.
