Topics in Wave Nature of Light: Hygens' Principle

1

1. Historical Background and Nature of Light

  • In 1676, Newton gave the corpuscular theory according to which light was assumed to consist of tiny particles, called corpuscles.
  • On the basis of this theory some phenomena were explained but interference, diffraction and polarisation remained unexplained.
  • In 1678, Huygens gave the wave theory and explained all the observed phenomena.

2. Wavefront and Ray

  • A wavefront is a surface in a medium on which all particles are in the same phase of oscillation.
  • In a homogeneous isotropic medium the wavefront is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.
  • A ray is a line drawn normal to the wavefront and gives the direction of propagation.

3. Huygens' Principle and Secondary Wavelets

  • According to Huygens, light travels in the form of waves.
  • Huygens imagined an all-pervading medium called luminiferous ether.
  • This hypothetical medium was assumed to be weightless, able to penetrate matter, with very small density and very large elasticity.

4. Reflection of Light Using Huygens' Principle

  • A plane wavefront incident on a plane reflecting surface produces a plane reflected wavefront.
  • For reflection, the incident wavefront, reflected wavefront, and reflecting surface lie in the same plane.
  • The wavefront method gives the laws of reflection directly.
