Topics in Junction Diodes

1

1. Formation of p-n Junction

  • A p-n junction diode is a basic semiconductor device formed by joining p-type and n-type regions.
  • The boundary between the two regions is called the p-n junction.
  • A p-type region has holes as majority carriers and fixed negatively charged acceptor ions.
2

2. Forward Bias and Reverse Bias

  • A junction diode is forward-biased when the positive terminal of the external battery is connected to the p-region and the negative terminal to the n-region.
  • A junction diode is reverse-biased when the positive terminal is connected to the n-region and the negative terminal to the p-region.
  • A p-n junction is forward biased if the potential of the p-region is higher than that of the n-region.
3

3. V-I Characteristics and Breakdown

  • The V-I characteristic shows how current changes with applied voltage in forward and reverse bias.
  • In forward bias, current is almost zero at first because the potential barrier opposes the applied voltage.
  • When the applied voltage exceeds the barrier potential, current rises rapidly.
4

4. Diode as a Rectifier

  • A rectifier converts alternating current or voltage into direct current or voltage.
  • A junction diode acts as a rectifier because it conducts in forward bias and blocks in reverse bias.
  • In half-wave rectification, only one half of the AC cycle appears across the load.
