1. Composition and Size of the Nucleus

  • The nucleus is the tiny central part of an atom where almost the entire mass and the positive charge are concentrated.
  • The diameter of the nucleus is of the order of 10^-15 m, while the size of the atom is of the order of 10^-10 m.
  • The nucleus is made of protons and neutrons, not protons and electrons.

2. Atomic Masses and Unified Atomic Mass Unit

  • Atomic masses refer to the masses of neutral atoms, not stripped nuclei.
  • Atomic masses include the mass of the nucleus, the masses of orbital electrons, and the mass equivalent of binding energies.
  • The unified atomic mass unit is written as u.

3. Classification of Nuclei

  • Isotopes are nuclei of the same element with the same Z but different A.
  • Isobars have the same A but different Z and different neutron number.
  • Isotones have the same number of neutrons but different Z and A.

4. Nuclear Constituents and Neutron Properties

  • Protons and neutrons are made up of smaller particles called quarks.
  • A proton contains two up quarks and one down quark.
  • A neutron contains two down quarks and one up quark.
