1. Displacement Current and Ampere-Maxwell Law

  • Ampere's circuital law relates the line integral of magnetic field around a closed loop to the conduction current through the loop.
  • A charging capacitor shows why the original form of Ampere's circuital law is incomplete.
  • Outside the capacitor plates, conduction current exists in the wires and displacement current is zero.

2. Maxwell's Equations

  • Maxwell's equations give a complete description of electromagnetic interactions.
  • Gauss' law of electricity is Maxwell's first equation.
  • Gauss' law of magnetism is Maxwell's second equation.

3. Electromagnetic Waves: Nature and Properties

  • Electromagnetic waves consist of electric and magnetic fields varying sinusoidally.
  • The electric and magnetic fields are mutually perpendicular.
  • Both fields are also perpendicular to the direction of propagation.

4. Electromagnetic Spectrum

  • The electromagnetic spectrum extends from very small gamma rays to very long radiowaves.
  • The spectrum has overlapping regions and no gaps in between.
  • Visible light is only a small part of the whole spectrum.
