Meaning and Importance of the Constitution
- A Constitution is a comprehensive document containing the rules for the rights and duties of citizens and the manner in which a country is governed.
- It regulates the position and powers of the three organs of government: the legislature, the executive and the judiciary.
- It explains how these organs are related to one another.
Making of the Indian Constitution
- The Cabinet Mission arrived in India in 1946 and proposed setting up a Constituent Assembly.
- Members of the Constituent Assembly were elected indirectly by the Provincial Legislative Assemblies.
- Elections to the Provincial Assembly were completed by July 1946.
Representation in the Constituent Assembly
- The wide-ranging membership of the Constituent Assembly gave representation to all shades of public opinion.
- The Cabinet Mission plan ensured representation to the General category, Muslims and Sikhs.
- Indian National Congress leaders ensured that Anglo-Indians, Indian Christians, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes also got representation.

- Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru proposed the Objectives Resolution on December 13, 1946.
