1. Force of Gravitation and Newton's Law

  • Gravitational force exists everywhere in the universe.
  • It is always attractive.
  • Every particle in the universe attracts every other particle.

2. Acceleration Due to Gravity and Motion Under Gravity

  • A falling body speeds up because earth's gravity accelerates it.
  • This acceleration is called acceleration due to gravity.
  • The value of g does not depend on the mass of the falling body.

3. Mass and Weight

  • Mass is the quantity of matter contained in a body.
  • Mass is constant and does not change from place to place.
  • Mass is a scalar quantity and is a measure of inertia.

4. Free Fall and Weightlessness

  • A body falling freely under gravity is weightless.
  • Weightlessness here means the reaction force becomes zero, not that gravity has stopped.
  • A weighing machine measures the reaction force R, which equals the weight of the object.
