1. Control and Coordination in the Human Body

  • The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, sense organs and nerves.
  • The endocrine system works through hormones secreted directly into the blood by specialized glands.
  • Both systems work together to control physical actions, thinking, emotions, and body functions.

2. Neuron: Structure and Function

  • The neuron is the basic structural and functional unit of the nervous system.
  • A neuron has dendrites, cell body and axon.
  • The cell body contains a well defined nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm.

3. Nerves and Major Divisions of the Nervous System

  • Nerves are thread-like structures which emerge from the brain and spinal cord and branch out to almost all parts of the body.
  • A nerve is a bundle of nerve fibres enclosed in a sheath.
  • There are three kinds of nerves: sensory, motor and mixed.

4. Central Nervous System: Brain and Spinal Cord

  • The CNS is regarded as the information processor in the body.
  • The brain lies under the skull and the spinal cord lies within the vertebral column.
  • The brain is protected by three meninges: dura mater, arachnoid and pia mater.
