1. Motion, Rest, and Types of Motion

  • Motion is relative: the same object may be at rest with respect to one observer and in motion with respect to another.
  • An observer with respect to itself cannot be in motion.
  • Motion is a continuous change in position with respect to the observer.

2. Distance and Displacement

  • Distance is the length of the path followed by an object.
  • Displacement is the change in position of the object.
  • Distance depends on the path taken, while displacement depends on initial and final positions.

3. Speed, Velocity, and Unit Conversion

  • Speed tells how fast an object moves.
  • Velocity tells how fast the position changes in a given direction.
  • Speed is scalar, so it has magnitude but no direction.

4. Uniform and Non-Uniform Motion

  • Uniform motion means equal distances are covered in equal intervals of time.
  • Non-uniform motion means unequal distances are covered in equal intervals of time.
  • Motion with constant velocity is uniform motion.
