1. Heredity, Variation, and Genetics

  • Heredity means the passing down of characters from parents to offspring.
  • Heredity is controlled by genes.
  • Variation means differences among individuals of the same kind.

2. Mendel and Laws of Inheritance

  • Gregor Johann Mendel was an Austrian monk who lived from 1822 to 1884.
  • He grew pea plants and studied inheritance carefully.
  • He postulated laws of inheritance and is known as the founder of genetics.

3. Chromosomes, Genes, and DNA

  • The nucleus of every cell except mammalian RBCs contains a fixed number of chromosomes.
  • Chromosomes occur in pairs, one from the father and one from the mother.
  • The paired number of chromosomes is called the diploid number and is written as 2n.

4. DNA Replication

  • Before cell division, DNA duplicates so that each daughter cell gets identical genetic material.
  • The double-stranded DNA molecule unwinds with the help of enzymes.
  • DNA polymerase helps form a new complementary strand.
