1. Biodiversity and Its Levels

  • Every organism begins life as a single cell.

2. Classification, Taxonomy, and Hierarchy

  • Classification is grouping organisms according to similarities and differences.
  • Classification is also termed systematics, and the science of classification is termed taxonomy.
  • Classification shows evolutionary relationships among organisms.

3. Three Domains of Life

  • All organisms are classified into three major domains.
  • Archaebacteria are thermophilic or heat loving bacteria that live in high temperature vents.
  • Certain bacteria live in oceanic vents at temperatures as high as 80°C to 110°C.

4. Five Kingdom Classification

  • Whittaker in 1969 suggested that bacteria should not be in plant kingdom and protozoa not in animal kingdom.
  • Whittaker gave the five kingdom classification.
  • The five kingdoms are Monera, Protoctista or Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
