Topics in Magnetic Effect of Electric Current

1

1. Magnets and Their Properties

  • Lodestone is a natural magnet discovered by ancient Greeks.
  • Lodestone attracts iron and nickel and is an oxide of iron, Fe3O4.
  • Magnetism is the property of attraction of iron particles towards lodestone.
2

2. Current-Carrying Conductor as a Magnet

  • When electric current flows through a conductor, a magnetic field is produced around it.
  • The effect was first observed by H.C. Oersted in 1820.
  • If current in the wire is increased, the deflection of the magnetic needle increases.
3

3. Electromagnet and Solenoid

  • A solenoid is a long thin coil of copper wire wound on a cylindrical form.
  • When current flows through a solenoid, it behaves like a bar magnet.
  • Placing soft iron inside the core of a solenoid increases the magnetic field and forms an electromagnet.
4

4. Electric Bell

  • An electric bell uses a U-shaped, horse shoe electromagnet with a soft iron core.
  • The bell also has an armature, hammer, gong, push button, and contact screw.
  • When the push button is pressed, current flows through the coil.
