Composition of the Supreme Court

Appointment and Qualifications of Judges

  • A person must be a citizen of India to be eligible.
  • Must fulfill one of the following: (a) served as a High Court judge for at least 5 years, or (b) been an advocate in a High Court for at least 10 years, or (c) be a distinguished jurist in the opinion
  • There is no fixed tenure before appointment — merit and experience matter most.

Tenure and Removal of Judges

  • Judges hold office until they reach the age of 65 years.
  • They can resign voluntarily by submitting a letter to the President.
  • Removal is only possible through impeachment by Parliament.

Salaries and Privileges

  • Salaries are determined by Parliament and charged on the Consolidated Fund of India — not subject to annual voting.
  • Chief Justice of India earns ₹2.8 lakh per month; other Supreme Court judges earn ₹2.5 lakh per month.
  • Judges receive rent-free official accommodation and other allowances.
