Composition of the Supreme Court
- The Supreme Court consists of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and up to 33 other judges (as per current strength).
- Originally, the Constitution provided for 1 Chief Justice and 7 judges; now it has been expanded.
- The President of India appoints all judges of the Supreme Court.
Appointment and Qualifications of Judges
- A person must be a citizen of India to be eligible.
- Must fulfill one of the following: (a) served as a High Court judge for at least 5 years, or (b) been an advocate in a High Court for at least 10 years, or (c) be a distinguished jurist in the opinion
- There is no fixed tenure before appointment — merit and experience matter most.
Tenure and Removal of Judges
- Judges hold office until they reach the age of 65 years.
- They can resign voluntarily by submitting a letter to the President.
- Removal is only possible through impeachment by Parliament.
Salaries and Privileges
- Salaries are determined by Parliament and charged on the Consolidated Fund of India — not subject to annual voting.
- Chief Justice of India earns ₹2.8 lakh per month; other Supreme Court judges earn ₹2.5 lakh per month.
- Judges receive rent-free official accommodation and other allowances.
