What is original solution O.S.?
Answer
This homogeneous mixture of salt and solvent is called original solution abbreviated as O.S. It is prepared before testing for cations.
What is the confirmatory test for ammonia gas?
Answer
Ammonia gas turns moist red litmus blue and turns Nessler's reagent brown. It is a basic gas. Equation: NH4Cl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O + NH3.
What happens when ammonia gas combines with hydrogen chloride gas?
Answer
White fumes of ammonium chloride are formed. Balanced equation: NH3 + HCl → NH4Cl (white fumes).
What is the test for carbon dioxide gas?
Answer
Carbon dioxide turns lime water milky. Milkiness disappears on passage of excess CO2. It shows no effect on potassium dichromate solution or KMnO4 solution. CO2 is a neutral-to-litmus acidic gas.
What is the reaction for heating calcium carbonate?
Answer
Balanced equation: CaCO3 → CaO + CO2. Observation: carbon dioxide gas is evolved and calcium oxide remains as residue.
What is the reaction for heating zinc carbonate?
Answer
Balanced equation: ZnCO3 → ZnO + CO2. Observation: carbon dioxide gas is evolved and zinc oxide remains as residue.
What is the test for chlorine gas?
Answer
Chlorine is a greenish yellow gas. It turns blue litmus red and finally bleaches it. It also turns starch iodide paper blue black.
