Judges of the International Court of Justice serve for a term of 9 years and can be re-elected. This longer term ensures judicial independence and allows judges to gain expertise in international law. The 15 judges are elected by both the General Assembly and Security Council voting separately. 6, 5, and 10 years are incorrect durations for ICJ judges.

The Hague, Netherlands

The International Court of Justice is located in The Hague, Netherlands. The Hague has been a center for international law and diplomacy for centuries. New York hosts the UN headquarters, Geneva hosts various UN agencies and offices, and Vienna also hosts some international organizations, but the ICJ specifically sits in The Hague at the Peace Palace.

Antonio Guterres from Portugal has been the Secretary-General since 2017 and continues to serve. Ban Ki-Moon from South Korea served from 2007-2016, Kofi Annan from Ghana served from 1997-2006, and Boutros Boutros-Ghali from Egypt served from 1992-1996.
