1. The Middle East: setting and background

  • The Middle East includes Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Turkey, the Yemen republics, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
  • Most of these states are Arab, but Turkey and Iran are not peopled by Arabs.
  • The region was strategically important because it lay between Europe, Asia and Africa and once produced over a third of the world’s oil supplies.

2. Arab unity and resistance to outside influence

  • Arab unity was promoted by language, religion and political nationalism.
  • A 1931 Islamic conference in Jerusalem declared that the Arab lands were a complete and indivisible whole and should be unified.
  • The Arab League tried to support Arab cooperation, but it achieved little politically.

3. Creation of Israel and the first Arab-Israeli war, 1948-9

  • Most Jews were driven out of Palestine by the Romans in AD 71, but a small Jewish presence remained.
  • The World Zionist Organization was founded in 1897 at Basle, Switzerland.
  • Britain became involved in Palestine in 1917 through the Balfour Declaration.

4. The Suez War of 1956 and Nasser’s rise

  • Nasser became president of Egypt in 1954.
  • He supported Arab unity, opposed western influence, and backed fedayeen activity against Israel.
  • He forced British troops to leave Egypt and nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956.
