The Two Opposing Sides

The Western Front: Stalemate and Trench Warfare

  • The German advance into Belgium was delayed by unexpectedly strong Belgian resistance — it took over two weeks to capture Brussels.
  • This delay allowed British forces (British Expeditionary Force) to land and kept the vital Channel ports free.
  • The Battle of the Marne (September 1914) was a turning point — French forces under Joffre drove the Germans back to the River Aisne, where they dug trenches.

The Eastern Front and Other Theatres

  • Russia mobilized faster than Germany expected but then made the strategic error of invading BOTH Austria AND Germany simultaneously.
  • Russians were successful against Austria (occupied Galicia) but suffered devastating defeats against Germany at Tannenberg (August 1914) and the Masurian Lakes (September 1914) — driven out of Germany
  • By end of 1914, one-third of Russia's 6.25 million mobilized men had no rifles — a catastrophic shortage.

The War at Sea

  • Both sides expected a major sea battle (like Trafalgar) between Dreadnought fleets, but both were cautious about risking their main fleets.
  • Germany had only 16 latest Dreadnoughts against Britain's 27, making them reluctant to seek a direct confrontation.
  • The THREE Allied naval aims: (1) Blockade the Central Powers to starve them; (2) Keep trade routes open to prevent the Allies from starving; (3) Transport and supply British troops via Channel ports.
