Water resources in India are depleting fast because of increasing population and rising demand, while supplies are shrinking due to over-utilisation and pollution. 2(ii)What factors are responsible for the highest groundwater development in the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu?Show solution
The highest groundwater development in Punjab, Haryana and Tamil Nadu is due to intensive irrigation needs. These states grow water-intensive crops like wheat and rice, and in Punjab and Haryana a very large part of the net sown area is under irrigation. The chapter also says that in Punjab and Haryana much of the irrigation comes from wells and tubewells, so groundwater is heavily used. Thus, the combination of assured irrigation for agriculture, water-intensive cropping, and dependence on wells/tubewells has caused very high groundwater use.
