1. Circle and Related Terms

  • All radii of a circle are equal in length.
  • A chord is a line segment joining any two points on a circle.
  • A diameter is a chord passing through the centre of the circle.

2. Arcs, Semicircle, and Angle Measure

  • A minor arc is an arc smaller than a semicircle.
  • A major arc is an arc larger than a semicircle.
  • The degree measure of an arc is the angle subtended by the arc at the centre of the circle.

3. Concentric Circles and Congruent Circles

  • Concentric circles have the same centre but different radii.
  • Examples of concentric circles are ripples in water and dartboard rings.
  • Two circles are congruent if and only if they have equal radii.

4. Important Theorems on Chords and Arcs

  • Two arcs of a circle or congruent circles are congruent if and only if the angles subtended by them at the centre are equal.
  • Two arcs of a circle or congruent circles are congruent if and only if their corresponding chords are equal.
  • Equal chords of a circle or congruent circles subtend equal angles at the centre.
