1. Co-ordinate System and Basic Terms

  • The horizontal number line XOX′ is called the x-axis.
  • The vertical number line YOY′ is called the y-axis.
  • The point O where both axes intersect is called the origin.

2. Quadrants and Sign Conventions

  • The two axes divide the plane into four quadrants.
  • Quadrant I is XOY and has signs (+, +).
  • Quadrant II is YOX′ and has signs (−, +).

3. Distance Formula and Distance from Origin

  • The distance between two points is the length of the line segment joining them.
  • The distance formula is derived using Pythagoras theorem.
  • Distance between P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2) is found by using differences of x-coordinates and y-coordinates.

4. Section Formula and Mid-Point Formula

  • The section formula gives the co-ordinates of a point dividing a line segment internally in a given ratio.
  • In the section formula, the ratio m:n corresponds to AP:PB.
  • The point P(x, y) dividing AB in ratio m:n internally is found by weighted average of the endpoints.
