1. Basic idea of concurrency

  • Three lines in a plane may be parallel, intersect in one point, intersect in two points, or intersect at most in three points.
  • Lines that pass through the same point are called concurrent lines.
  • The common point is called the point of concurrency.

2. Angle bisectors and the incentre

  • An angle bisector divides an angle into two equal parts.
  • A triangle has three angle bisectors.
  • The three angle bisectors of a triangle are concurrent.

3. Perpendicular bisectors and the circumcentre

  • A perpendicular bisector of a side bisects the side at right angles.
  • A triangle has three sides, so three perpendicular bisectors can be drawn.
  • The three perpendicular bisectors of the sides of a triangle are concurrent.

4. Altitudes and the orthocentre

  • An altitude is a perpendicular drawn from a vertex to the opposite side.
  • A triangle has three vertices, so three altitudes can be drawn.
  • The three altitudes of a triangle are concurrent.
