Topics in Exponents And Radicals

1

1. Exponential Notation and Basic Terms

  • The notation for writing the product of a number by itself several times is called the Exponential Notation or Exponential Form.
  • In a power like 7^2, 7 is the base and 2 is the exponent or index.
  • Exponential notation makes repeated multiplication shorter and easier to work with.
2

2. Laws of Exponents

  • Law 1: multiplying powers with the same base adds the exponents.
  • Law 2: dividing powers with the same base and m > n subtracts the exponents.
  • Law 3: when n > m, division gives a reciprocal power.
3

3. Rational Exponents and Prime Factorisation

  • a^(1/q) is defined as the qth root of a.
  • The general rational power formula is a^(p/q) = qth root of a^p.
  • Prime factorisation writes a natural number as a product of powers of prime numbers.
4

4. Surds and Their Types

  • A surd is a positive irrational number of the type nth root of x, where x is a positive rational number and the nth root cannot be found exactly.
  • A surd must satisfy two conditions: it is irrational and it is a root of a positive rational number.
  • When the order of a surd is not mentioned, it is taken as 2.
