Topics in Algebraic Expressions And Polynomials

1

1. Basic Algebraic Ideas

  • Letters called literal numbers are used as symbols to represent numbers.
  • A variable is a literal number which can have different values.
  • A constant is a literal number which has a fixed value.
2

2. Algebraic Expressions and Polynomials

  • An algebraic expression is a combination of numbers, variables and arithmetical operations.
  • A polynomial is a special algebraic expression.
  • A polynomial must satisfy three conditions: variables do not occur in the denominator, exponents of variables are whole numbers, and numerical coefficients are real numbers.
3

3. Like Terms, Unlike Terms, and Degree

  • Like terms are terms having the same variables and the same exponents of the variables.
  • Unlike terms are terms that are not like terms.
  • Arithmetical numbers are like terms because 3 = 3x^0 and -5 = -5x^0.
4

4. Evaluation and Zero of a Polynomial

  • To evaluate a polynomial, substitute the given value for the variable and simplify.
  • x = 1 is a zero of 5x^3 + 3x^2 - 4x - 4 because substitution gives 0.
  • x = -1 is not a zero of x^3 + 3x^2 + 3x + 2 because the value is 1, not 0.
