1. What is a Quadratic Equation?
- A polynomial of degree two is called a quadratic polynomial.
- When a quadratic polynomial is equated to zero, it becomes a quadratic equation.
- A quadratic equation is studied in one variable.
2. Standard Form and Rewriting Equations
- A quadratic equation in standard form is ax^2 + bx + c = 0.
- The equation can be rewritten from any valid quadratic form into standard form.
- In the definition section, a > 0 is stated; later formula tables and key points state a != 0.
3. Roots or Solutions
- The value of the variable for which the left-hand side and right-hand side of the equation become equal is called a root or solution.
- The zeroes of a quadratic polynomial are the roots of the corresponding quadratic equation.
- A quadratic equation has at most two roots.
4. Factor Method
- The factor method solves a quadratic equation by factorising it into linear factors.
- After factorisation, each factor is set equal to zero.
- This method works well when the equation can be factorised easily.
