1. Special Products

  • Special products are frequently used algebraic expansions that save time in multiplication.
  • (a + b)^2 and (a - b)^2 differ only in the sign of the middle term.
  • (a + b)(a - b) is the difference of squares.

2. Factorization of Polynomials

  • Factorization is the reverse process of multiplication.
  • A polynomial is completely factored if none of its factors can be further expressed as a product of two polynomials of lower degree with integer coefficients.
  • Common factor method is the first method to try.

3. HCF and LCM of Polynomials

  • The HCF of polynomials is formed from the highest degree common factors with the greatest numerical coefficient common to all.
  • The LCM of polynomials is formed from the lowest degree combination needed to include all factors with the smallest numerical coefficient that is a multiple of all given coefficients.
  • For monomials, HCF uses the HCF of numerical coefficients and the common variable factors with the highest powers common to all.

4. Rational Expressions

  • A rational expression is an algebraic expression written in the form P/Q, where P and Q are polynomials and Q is non-zero.
  • Every polynomial is a rational expression because it can be written with denominator 1.
  • A rational expression need not be a polynomial.
