Composition of the Atmosphere

Structure of the Atmosphere

  • The atmosphere is divided into five layers: Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Ionosphere, and Exosphere.
  • Troposphere is the lowest layer (up to 12 km) where all weather occurs; temperature decreases with height.
  • Stratosphere extends up to 50 km and contains the ozone layer; temperature increases due to ozone absorption of UV rays.
