1. Waves

  • Waves are formed when wind blows over the surface of the ocean, creating ripples that grow into waves.

  • Tides are the regular rise and fall of sea levels caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun.
  • The moon has a stronger effect on tides than the sun because it is closer to Earth.
  • There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours and 50 minutes — this is called a semi-diurnal tide cycle.

  • Ocean currents are large flows of water moving in specific directions across the oceans.
  • Currents can be warm (from equator to poles) or cold (from poles to equator).
  • Main factors causing ocean currents: wind, Coriolis effect, temperature, salinity, and shape of continents.
