  • Three types of coral reefs are generally recognised: fringing reef, barrier reef, and atoll.
  • These types differ in position, shape, lagoon development, and distance from the coast.
  • Fringing reef grows along the coast of a continent or an island.

  • Fringing reef is a coral platform built along the coast of a continent or an island.
  • It is a narrow belt with a steep slope towards the sea and a gentle slope towards the land.
  • Its width varies from 0.5 km to 2.5 km.
