  • Lious Agassiz proved in 1834 that glaciers move.
  • He used pegs placed across the width of a glacier and found that the middle pegs moved faster than the side pegs.

  • There are four main types of glaciers: continental glaciers, ice caps, piedmont glaciers, and valley glaciers.
  • Continental glaciers are huge masses of ice covering vast areas and spreading outward in all directions.
  • Ice caps are covers of snow and ice on mountains from which valley or mountain glaciers originate.

4. Erosional Work of a Glacier

  • A glacier erodes, transports, and deposits material.
  • Pure ice is least erosive.
  • The main erosive tool is drift, also called boulder clay or glacial debris.
