- Soil is defined by F.J. Monkhouse as the thin surface layer on Earth comprising mineral particles, decayed organic material, living organisms, soil water, and soil atmosphere.
- Soil formation begins with the breaking down of rocks by weathering and erosion.
- Humus is decayed plant and animal material that forms the organic part of the soil.
The Soil Profile
- A soil profile is a vertical section of soil from the surface down to the bedrock showing individual layers called horizons.
- A typical soil profile has FOUR horizons: A, B, C, and D.
- A-Horizon (Topsoil): Uppermost layer; rich in humus and organic matter; upper part has more humus, lower part has more organic matter; also called Zone of Eluviation.
Properties of Soil
- Soil properties are broadly divided into Physical Properties and Chemical Properties.
- PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: Colour, Texture, Structure, Density, Porosity, Consistency, Temperature, Water Content.
- Colour indicates how soil formed and what it contains; e.g., iron gives red colour, humus gives dark/black colour.
Factors of Soil Formation
- There are FIVE major factors of soil formation: Parent Material, Climate, Living Organisms, Topography, and Time.
- ACTIVE FACTORS (cause changes): Climate and Living Organisms.
