3. Volcanoes and Their Hazards

  • Volcanic eruptions can destroy life and property through hot lava, volcanic materials, fires, river blockage, floods, and climatic changes.
  • The Laki fissure eruption in Iceland in 1783 was extremely violent and the lava flow travelled 350 km.
  • The Laki eruption killed about one-fourth of Iceland's population.

4. Earthquakes: Magnitude, Intensity, and Risk

  • Earthquakes are tremors produced by vibratory waves passing through the rocks of the earth.
  • They may be caused by tectonic forces, volcanic eruptions, rock bursts, subsidence in mines, and impounding of reservoirs.
  • Magnitude is measured by the Richter scale.
